West End 2019 - Road Traffic Solutions

West End 2019

James Glancy are responsible for the design, installation and removal of the Christmas decorations on many of the roads within the West End of London including the iconic Regent Street.

Project – The planning for these tasks literally begins as soon as the decorations have been removed from the previous year and involve many high profile stakeholders including The Crown Estates, New West End Company,Transport For London (TFL) and Westminster County Council (WCC) to name a few.

It requires the team to construct a calendar whereby decorations can be installed across the West End involving many major routes through London including Regent Street, Oxford Street, Piccadilly and New Bond Street without massively impacting traffic in the centre of the capital. We also have to consider the public safety within this footprint particularly as machinery is used for the installation and the footfall within the area is understandably huge.

Solution – After many meetings we had a plan where collaborative working was key in order for all of the decorations to be installed on time but flexibility was also needed to facilitate local businesses whilst closures were in place. Once the calendar was agreed, RTS continued to liaise with different departments within WCC, TFL and James Glancy, this resulted in the submission in excess of 70 applications in a timely manner to ensure licenses were granted for the works.

Feedback – The whole installation / removal project happens across five months with the planning taking the majority of the other seven months. The decorations were installed on time with no safety concerns.

The client thanked ourselves and commented that it’s been brilliant working with us again this year and it feels like you are actually working for James Glancy as one of our team and not a supplier .
